Today I’m excited to finally announce the launch of my book on burnout! It’s called Burnout: A Call to Wake Up. You can get it on Amazon for FREE for the next 72 hours here. (If you don’t have a kindle or prefer a PDF copy, just email me and I’ll send it to you).
As many of you know, I went through a period of severe burnout a couple of years ago. This has led me to write a lot about my experience on Substack, both as part of my healing process but also to share what I learned along the way.
This book brings together a lot of these stories and lessons. Some of this you’ve already read on Substack, but there’s also a lot of new information I’ve added. It’s on Kindle now and will be out on paperback in a few weeks.
I am giving it away for free for now because I believe it’s a great way to reach more people. Please share this with a friend and leave a review on Amazon if you read the book!
What the book is about 📖
Many people have the misconception that burnout is about “working too much.” But that’s not entirely true. If your work is no longer satisfying or you are not staying true to yourself, even doing it for a few hours a week is enough to get you burned out.
People who get burnout are generally very passionate about what they do. Yet when things aren’t working out, instead of asking for help, taking a step back, or finding healthy coping mechanisms, they double-down on their work. This makes them hate the work that they once enjoyed and creates a negative spiral.
Ultimately, this is unsustainable and leads to burnout. In my case, I was in denial that things weren’t working out. I believed that raising another round of funding for my startup, or having the right person or right product would solve my problems. They didn’t. This caused me to alienate myself from others and become bitter about everything.
It took a while to dig myself out of that hole. In fact, it took me running away and going on 20 days of meditative silence in Bali to really face up to the facts. In the process I’ve had to face the truths in myself that I had been hiding. I uncovered a lot of psychological traps and unconscious biases that controlled my life. I questioned the meaning of work and happiness and having a life worth living. This wasn’t always fun…. but it was the most important time in my life.
