One of the Dalai Lama’s favorite meditation practices is called Self-Inquiry. It involves investigating your experience to look for a “self” that is present.
It is a process of negation. You systematically look at all parts of your experience — your body, thoughts, emotions, etc. and ask “is this me?”
As you keep getting the answer ‘no,’ you just keep moving down and asking the same question. Eventually, it hits you — Oh, snaps.
It’s like seeing your reflection in a window, and then making the shift in gaze to see outside. It’s subtle. And it opens up a whole new world.
Many spiritual teachers, from Sri Nisargadatta to Rob Burbea, talk about this approach to see the nondual nature of reality.
It’s a bit of an advanced practice, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying. Get your mind calm through some breathing and relaxation and then try this.
