Three Layers of Forgiveness

Forgiving yourself, forgiving others, and asking for forgiveness

“If you want to see the brave, look at those who can forgive.” - The Bhagavad Gita

In this meditation practice, I combine the Forgiveness practices I learned from Jack Kornfield and Bhante Vimalaramsi.

It invites you to repeat certain phrases quietly, touching your heart and forgiving the past. Forgiveness, I once heard, is giving up hope for a better past.

We are not forgetting the past, but we are shedding the weight that we have been carrying around. We finally let go.

We have all hurt others and been hurt by others. We have all held on to pain through our stories and fear and ignorance.

And yet, we are all capable of change. We all have the capacity to forgive.

If love and joy aren’t flowing in your life, maybe there is something to forgive first — a block in the way. Once that is cleared with forgiveness, feelings like love and joy naturally arise. As Rumi say,

"Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it."

This is a powerful practice and has been transformational for me. I hope you enjoy.

Before starting this practice, set an intention to forgive:

I have held onto this pain long enough. To the extent that I can, I offer my forgiveness.
