I first heard the poem “Just Like Me” by Ram Dass and Mirabai Bush about three years ago through one of my teachers. It invites us to see how others are in so many ways, just like us. I started reading this poem during my eye gazing sessions in Tokyo, and people always seem to be moved by it, often to the point of tears. So I’m sharing it with you here, with my voice recording.
You can do this practice with someone sitting directly across from you—soft eye contact, relaxed face, blinking totally allowed. Or just close your eyes and bring someone to mind, especially someone you’re in conflict with or long to connect with. You can even try it with a photo, if that feels easier. The words still work.
I sometimes imagine all the world leaders sitting in a giant UN hall, locking eyes between speeches and posturing, whispering “just like me…” under their breath. Might be a better use of time than another round of statements no one listens to. In a world full of talking heads and hardened positions, a little quiet connection might actually get us somewhere.’t hurt to reconnect with our humanity.
Enjoy!
