Everything changes. We are always becoming something new.
Think about it: every time you feel you've reached a goal, life shifts again. You get the promotion but now face new responsibilities. You repair one relationship only for another challenge to arise. Even the sense of stability you might feel right now is fleeting. Everything is in motion, including you.
You can see this for yourself right now.
First, slowly turn your head and look around. Notice and name what’s around. On one hand, it might seem like things are solid and stable – objects around you that you can name. These are concepts we have labels for.
Closing your eyes and looking inward, you notice parts of your body, feelings and thoughts. They all have names and seem very solid. Some of them don’t seem to be changing at all and are just part of your body. This is often how we see the world.
But now look again.
This time remind yourself that everything has a limited shelf-life. Everything, and everyone, will eventually change form and fade away.
Thoughts and emotions are coming and going. Your body is changing – cells being replaced every few seconds, digestion happening, your heart beating all on its own. Buildings and trees are changing more slowly, but eventually, they too will be gone.
Can you see this change – however slow or fast it is happening right now? It’s all decaying, shifting, transforming over time.
